Why it needs an adapter

Like every Nest, this thermostat expects 24V terminals. Split, ducted and VRF indoor units in the Gulf use the AC maker's own controller connection instead. The DropAir adapter supplies the 24V power and translates the thermostat's calls for cooling, heating and fan into commands the indoor unit understands.

Power on an adapter install

Google notes that some systems need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. On a DropAir install that question goes away, because the adapter powers the thermostat itself over the thermostat cable.
